SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

Why it’s important

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art of getting your web pages to show up in organic search results on the major search engines (Google, Yahoo & Bing).

These organic listings are important because, a.) you do not need to pay for ads if you have good SEO, and b.) web users trust organic search results, over paid ads, and they click on organic results at a higher rate.

At a minumum, you want people to be able to find your business online if they’re looking for it. (This is branded SEO.) And ideally, you’ll be able to compete with your main competitors for more generic search results for your products and services (“new tires”, “windshield replacement”, “auto body repair”).

HOW IT WORKS

Google is the 800 pound gorilla in this industry, so it’s all about understanding their algorithim.

Today, good content is king. When somebody searches for something, clicks on your site, and spends a good amount of time exploring there, that tells Google that you liked the result they showed you

So, they’ll increase your ranking on future results. This means, thinking about what your website users are looking for, and creating that content, will help your SEO

The most effective long term strategy

While Search Engine Optimization takes investment and patience, over time it’s the most effective way to generate leads for your business. Web users click on organic results twice as often as paid ads, so if your result is near the top, it’s a very valuable lead source. The goal is to ween yourself off of paying for ads, to reduce your monthly marketing spend.

The example above illustrates how much two companies, one investing in Search Engine Optimization, the other in paid advertising, ultimately pay for their leads. When done right, the cost of SEO leads go down over time, without having to relying on ads
